Form der Tiere – Petshop by karhard®
Normalerweise wohnt der Kirschprachtkäfer in abgestorbenen Ästen auf Streuobstwiesen. Im Petshop by karhard®, in Berlin-Kreuzberg, prangt er als riesiger Teppich an der Wand; es ist eine Sonderanfertigung des Teppichherstellers Ferreira de Sá aus Portugal (seit 1946). Die blau-schwarzen Farbtöne sind dem prächtigen Panzer des echten Insektes nachempfunden. Botanical Silk, Mohair und Wolle lassen ihn der besonderen Art der „Kuschelteppichkäfer“ angehören. Wer ihn sieht, möchte sofort auf Tuchfühlung mit ihm gehen, und genau das ist im Sinne der Ladenbesitzer. Am Eingang des Showrooms lädt ein Schild „Please-Touch“ direkt zum Anfassen sämtlicher Artworks und Deko-Objekte ein. Der Raum ist offen für alle Design- und Einrichtungsfans, Ästhet:innen und Tierliebhaber:innen.
In wechselnden, inszenierten Settings wird hier das sorgsam kuratierte Warensortiment aus dem Reich der Tiere präsentiert. Bei der Auswahl stehen Originalität, handwerkliche Qualität und Innovation mit nachhaltigem Anspruch im Vordergrund. Langlebige, hochwertige und„ehrliche“ Werkstoffe wie Holz, Jute oder Leder steigern den haptischen Hochgenuss.
Die Produkte reichen vom kleinen Gebrauchsgegenstand bis zu echten Liebhaberstücken, vom Maus-Schlüsselanhänger bis hin zum großen ledernen Nashorn von Omersa aus England zum Streicheln und Sitzen. Der Urheber, Dimitri Omersa, der liebevoll „Old Bill“ genannt wurde, entwarf 1927 den ersten Schemel aus Lederresten in Schweineform.
„Die Tierwelt war für uns schon immer eine wichtige Inspirationsquelle. Bisher ging es darum, Farben und Formen für unsere Raumkonzepte zu adaptieren, um Materialität und Textur. Mit unserem neuen Petshop machen wir diese Wesen nun selbst zum Thema fürs Einrichten. Vielleicht erfahren sie sogar ein bisschen mehr Wertschätzung, wenn ihre liebevoll produzierten ‚Art-Genossen‘ ins Wohnumfeld einziehen“, sagt Gründerin Alexandra Erhard.
Nicht nur die Kunsthandwerker:innen, Designer:innen, Manufakturen und Produzent:innen, die hinter den Produkten stehen, entsprechen dem hohen Qualitätsanspruch von karhard®.
Auch das Corporate Design wurde von einer der renommiertesten Design-Agenturen der Welt umgesetzt, Gottschalk+Ash Int’l aus der Schweiz.
Der Webshop wurde speziell für Petshop von Stop&Play mit Sitz in Großbritannien und Brasilien produziert und programmiert.
Shape of animals – Petshop by karhard®
From the first step into the animal-themed store, you are invited by a sign to “Please-Touch” to get a feel for the artwork and decorative objects. The space is open to all design and interior design fans, aesthetes and animal lovers.
From hereon the adventure begins. The cherry jewel beetle usually lives in dead branches in orchards. However, in the Petshop by karhard®, in Berlin-Kreuzberg, the beetle is emblazoned as a massive carpet on the wall, custom-made by the carpet manufacturer Ferreira de Sá from Portugal (established 1946). The blue-black colours on the beetle's magnificent shell are brought to life with the composition of botanical silk, mohair and wool, making it belong to the unique species of “cuddly carpet beetles”. Anyone who sees him immediately wants to get up close and personal with him, and that's precisely what the shop owners want: to get personal and connected.
As you spend more time, you notice you are not in an ordinary store. You are in the presence of an art gallery. The carefully curated range of goods from the animal kingdom is presented here in changing, staged settings. When choosing, the focus is on originality, quality craftsmanship and innovation with sustainable standards. Long-lasting, high-quality and “honest” materials such as wood, jute or leather increase the tactile pleasure.
The products range from small everyday items to real collector's items, from mouse keyrings, bottle openers to the giant leather rhino by Omersa from England to pet and sit on. The creator, Dimitri Omersa, affectionately known as “Old Bill”, designed the first stool in the shape of a pig in 1927 from leftover leather.
“The animal world has always been an important source of inspiration for us. So far, it has been about adapting colours and shapes for our spatial concepts, materiality, and texture. With our new pet shop, we are now making these creatures the theme for furnishing. Maybe they will even experience a little more appreciation when their lovingly produced ‘art comrades’ move into their living environment,” says founder Alexandra Erhard.

The corporate design was also implemented by one of the most renowned design agencies in the world, Gottschalk+Ash Int’l from Switzerland.
The webshop was produced and specifically programmed for Petshop by Stop&Play based in the UK & Brazil, that specialises in Retail, Leisure and interactive interfaces.
